Skater name: Malyss Heart

Skater number: 130

Position: Whatever my team needs me to play, but mostly blocker

Years Played: 10 years

How did you get into derby? I grew up doing martial arts.  So when I moved to Las Vegas, I found a studio to practice at.  Shortly after I received my 3rd degree black belt the school closed down due to money issues.  I was so depressed because I loved my sport.  A friend bought tickets to the local derby to cheer me up because the local theater was doing Rocky Horror Picture Show for the half time entertainment.  I love that movie!  Anyway, 10 minutes into the first half I had fallen in love with this crazy sport.  I called the league the next day and had jumped all in the next weekend.

How did you select your name? Malyss is actually my second name.  When I started in Las Vegas I was Eve L. Angel (a spin off Evil Dead).  But when I got to ACRD, they already had an Eve L., so I had to pick again.  I think picking my derby name was the hardest part because at the time, you couldn’t have anything similar to anyone else.  I love Alice in Wonderland, but most of the Alice names were already taken, so my name is actually another twist of Alice from a book series called the Looking Glass Wars.  Alyss Heart Queen of Hearts turned Malyss Heart Queen of Broken Hearts.

Worst derby injury? I have been very blessed that I haven’t had any major injuries so far.  My first injury was my very worst.  It was my second official game and an opposing player fell on the track right in front of me.  I still was a bambi-legged skater, so I fell right on top of her and landed hard on my right knee.  I probably should have had the knee looked at, but instead I just walked it off.  I was off skates for almost 6 months though…

Tunes that get you pumped on bout day: Oh too many to list!  Music really gets me going, I have a Spotify list that I change and adapt all the time… I love anything that makes me get up and dance.  Some of my faves right now:

Heads Will Roll – Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs

Warriors – Imagine Dragons

Shut Up and Dance – Walk the Moon

Bailando – Enrique Iglesias

Any current derby crushes? Is it possible to crush a whole team? Cause I have to say, my team is full of strong, determined, and amazing women.  Each woman on my team gives this sport her all and they each inspire me to be a better player and athlete every day.  I love me some Lone Star Assassins!

Most rewarding derby experience so far: Finding my tribe!  I always struggled with fitting in when I was younger, but I feel like I have found my derby family.  It is an amazing thing to feel like you have found a place where you belong, where you matter, and where you are encouraged to be the best version of yourself.

Advice for new skaters? Never ever compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.  Derby is a tough sport, not everyone is going to grasp it right off the bat.  Keep pushing through the uncomfortable beginnings where you don’t feel like you are going to make it and never let someone else’s progress discourage you!  It took a long time for me to learn that lesson, and I still struggle with it at times, but you have to find your own strengths in this sport.  Comparison kills joy.  Encourage one another along your journey and celebrate your achievements as you improve.
